If you’re moving into your first apartment and trying to figure out everything you need to settle into your new home, then you’re in luck because I’m sharing a comprehensive checklist of apartment furniture, decor, and supplies!

When I started preparing to move for my first job a few years ago, I spent months planning out all my furniture and decor, even before looking at apartments. I kept a Pinterest board of everything that caught my eye and put together a budgeting spreadsheet with every item I would need. If you don’t have the time or energy for such an extensive planning process, don’t worry because I’m here to help with the ultimate first apartment checklist.

You won’t need everything on this list right away, so it’s wise to focus on the most practical items at first, especially if you’re on a budget. Check out my list of essential apartment furniture, decor, and supplies so you’ll be sure to prioritize the right things before moving. For easy reference, each of those essentials will be listed here again, marked with an asterisk (*) to highlight their importance.

Once you’ve taken care of the must-haves, you can shift your attention to additional nice-to-have items that enhance your new apartment and make it feel even more like home. Everyone has different preferences for their living spaces, so there may be items on this checklist that you don’t need or want. Even so, this list is an excellent guide that will make it so much easier to pick furniture, decor, and supplies for your apartment. I’ve even included links to some items I own and love to make the shopping process that much simpler for you!

Decor to Add Personal Touches to Your Apartment

Now for the fun part! Unlike all the furniture and supplies we covered above, decor isn’t confined to any specific room. It’s versatile and can be used throughout your entire apartment to add a personal touch to your home. This section is a one-stop shop for all the decorative items you may want in your apartment, no matter the room.

  1. Curtains* + hooks* + rod* (especially crucial for bare windows)
  2. Lamps* (floor lamps and table lamps are especially crucial for rooms or spaces with poor overhead lighting)
  3. Rugs (the perfect finishing touch in bedrooms, dining rooms, and living rooms, even if your floors are carpeted)
  4. Wall decor (art, photography, tapestries, floating shelves, mirrors)
  5. Throw pillows (for beds and sofas)
  6. Throw blankets (for beds and sofas, but I also use one at my desk to stay cozy on work-from-home days!)
  7. Houseplants (plants, as well as the pots they go in, are a creative way to decorate)
  8. Decorative knick-knacks (candles, vases, small souvenirs)

For all of these decorative items, pick colors and styles that align with the aesthetic you want in your home. With the right decor choices, you can infuse your space with your unique tastes and preferences, making your apartment a true reflection of your personality.
